India will get Mobile Phone Number portability by September 20, 2009

Indian Mobile Phone users will soon get the option to switch service providers without losing their existing phone number. This service will be a big advantage for the million mobile phone users in the country.

The first phase of this service will be made available by September 20, 2009 in four states - Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kolkata.

During the second phase, which would take place by early next year, this feature will be available in all the remaining mobile phone circles in the country.

MNP Interconnection Telecom solutions (a joint venture of Telcordia Technologies) has received the license to implement this service in the east and south for 10 years.
